As a world-class financial trading and business center, the island of Hong Kong and home to over 7 million, is generally thought to be primarily urban. In fact, only a quarter of the island consists of the densely populated center crammed with skyscrapers. Following our 15-hour flight from LA, we arrived in the city at 6 AM. After a shower and breakfast at the "Arrival Lounge", we boarded an airport shuttle bus that whisked us to the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Causeway Bay.
With 36 hours before our scheduled departure on our Holland American 28-day Southeast Asia cruise, I had booked tours of the city filling virtually every waking moment to maximize our stay. Instead, we wound up spending almost the entirety of our time in our hotel room. Unfortunately, I had developed bronchitis during our flight, which coupled with my asthma and the city's legendary air quality issues, left me unable to venture far. Alan arrived with a miserable head cold, combined with jet lag, left him wanting to curl up in bed rather than rush out into the 45 degree, overcast, rainy day.
Disappointing yes! It's doubtful that we will find our way back here again. But for now, we just want to get healthy and enjoy the remainder of our trip.
